2018-2019 Bulletin # 6

FORE! It is not too late to register to play or volunteer to help at our golf tournament this Monday at Moraga Country ClubThis fundraiser supports our technology programs throughout the school from chrome books and i-pads to ink and projectors! Additional information is listed below. Thank you for your support of this great day!

Although we are only a few weeks into the school year, we have already had numerous parents notify us of students missing school for personal reasons. As a reminder, here is our policy as published in the school handbook, and we appreciate your understanding and adherence to this policy:

VACATION POLICY/HOMEWORK DURING VACATION ABSENCE
Absences for vacations beyond those indicated on the school calendar are not excused. Specific assignments will not be given to students prior to trips, and teachers should not be asked. Assignments whose due dates have been given to the class prior to the absence are to be met by the student, either by submitting the assignment prior to the absence, or by making arrangements to ensure the assignment arrives to the teacher on the due date.
Almighty God,
bless our nation
and make it true
to the ideas of freedom and justice
and brotherhood for all who make it great.

Guard us from war,
from fire and wind,
from compromise, fear, confusion.

Be close to our president and our statesmen;
give them vision and courage,
as they ponder decisions affecting peace
and the future of the world.

Make me more deeply aware of my heritage;
realizing not only my rights
but also my duties
and responsibilities as a citizen.

Make this great land
and all its people
know clearly Your will,
that they may fulfill
the destiny ordained for us
in the salvation of the nations,

and the restoring of all things in Christ.

Amen

Did You Know...

Did you know that you can support St. Perpetua School (and earn scrip profit!) by using Benefit-Mobile?
The Benefit Mobile application(www.benefit-mobile.com) lets you purchase e-gift cards for the exact amount of your purchase when at the checkout register.  You can set the App up to debit your checking account (a greater profit rebate) or your credit card (a smaller profit rebate).

Did you know that you can support St. Perpetua School while shopping on Amazon?

Simply go to AmazonSmile (www.smile.amazon.com) and on your first visit there, you are prompted to select a charitable organization from their list of eligible organizations.  St. Perpetua School is on that list!  Amazon will donate .5% of all your eligible purchases to the school each year.  It's that easy.  Unfortunately, AmazonSmile contributions cannot be individually tracked for family credit.

You cannot access Amazon smile from the app, unfortunately.  You'll have to paste AmazonSmile into your browser and do all your shopping from there!  All of the perks of Amazon Prime apply as well.
A Shout-Out...

A THANK YOU! Shout-Out to Rose Maghariwho has been gathering Golf Tournament donations from friends and co-workers.  Way to go, Rose!
A second THANK YOU! Shout-Out to Lisa McGuinness, who has introduced us to Benefit-Mobile, another way to earn profits for St. Perpetua School.  Check it out at www.benefit-mobile.com!           Way to go, Lisa!
The Counselor's Corner
I hope you and your students have settled into a nice rhythm at St. Perpetua this school year. I have really enjoyed reintroducing myself to kids and meeting new students in their classrooms over the past few weeks.

One of my main career goals is to encourage students to advocate for themselves- whether that be for academic, social, emotional, spiritual or physical support. It is extremely important that kids learn how to reach out when they truly need help. I am thankful that the stigma of asking for mental health support is decreasing, but we still have a long way to go. As parents we must role model reaching up (for goals),reaching in (to our hearts) and reaching out (for help). We must continue to educate ourselves about mental health in order to best raise our children to reach for their potential.

THIS evening there is a wonderful free opportunity at Campolindo High School for you (and possibly your older children) to educate yourself more about anxiety in students. (See more information about the film, Angst below). In my 14+ years of counseling, I have seen a pretty steady increase in number of children with high anxiety. Most of us have experienced anxiety in certain situations, but when it interferes so greatly with school or our everyday lives, we need to be sure we learn tools to cope with or decrease that anxiety. To gain those tools, we must need to start by actually discussing anxiety. This free movie screening is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about anxiety and to learn how to have those essential discussions with our kids.

Free Community Screening, Angst

AngstBreaking the Stigma Around Anxiety is a documentary that looks at anxiety, its causes and effects, and what we can do about it. Angst will feature interviews with kids and young adults who suffer or have suffered from anxiety, and what they've learned. The film also includes experts charged with helping people manage their anxiety and those who focus on researching its causes and sociological effects while offering tools and resources that provide hope. The project will explore a conversation about anxiety from a peer-to-peer standpoint that is intimate, honest and accessible. Families, educators, students, employees and members of any community will benefit from this film (appropriate for age 10 years+).
View the trailer -  HERE

I highly recommend this documentary for all parents (and some older children). One part of this film that stood out to me was when Michael Phelps makes an appearance and opens up about his struggles. Phelps, along with many other celebrities, are making great strides in decreasing the stigma around mental health.

Below are a few quotes from other well-known personalities who have opened up about the importance of mental health services. (From this article):
- My brain and my heart are really important to me. I don't know why I wouldn't seek help to have those things be as healthy as my teeth. (Kerry Washington)
- We need to help young people and their parents understand that it's not a sign of weakness to ask for help. (Kate Middleton,The Duchess of Cambridge)
- I spent a lot of time avoiding feelings. And now I have no time left for that. (Brad Pitt)
- There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help. (Catherine Zeta-Jones)

Please be sure to complete a Counselor Permission Form for this year to give your student the option to reach out to me as needed. And, as always, feel free to contact me anytime.

Reception & Discussion Opportunity
Dear Friends,
Please join us for a reception on Monday, Sept 17 at 6pm
Lynn & Sean Hogan's home at 4015 Canyon Road, Lafayette

Father George  Alengadan, pastor of St Joseph Basilica in Alameda and formerly of Santa Maria parish will be there along with Fr. Tom, a Salesian priest from Kerala, India who was serving as Chaplain to the Missionaries of Charity Sisters in Yemen. On March 4, 2016, a group of unidentified gunmen barged into the care home for the elderly, run by the sisters, killing 16 people including 4 sisters. Fr. Tom was abducted. What followed was 557 days in lonely captivity in unknown locations until he was released on September 12, 2017.

Fr. Tom's account of his experience will be inspirational as he narrates his life as a hostage. His book is a classic testimonial to the truth that the Lord hears our prayers and answers them. More information about Fr. Tom and his experience can be found here.

Thank you!

Our hope is for our school community to grow in a peaceful and safe world, where people understand the wealth in love and generosity.
Come in on this Friday afternoon and help us celebrate peace and love with a peace craft project and write a colorful "peace is..." poetry display for all to share. Please email ahead about attendance if Friday is not already on your calendar.

Birthday Club
Join the Library's Birthday Club to celebrate your child's birthday and foster a love of reading.  For a donation of $20 per child, families can help to support the library.  Click here for form.

This is the way we raise funds to purchase new books that the kids want to read.  Each Birthday Club student gets to select a new book to purchase for the library.  A commemorative label will be placed in the front of the book with the child's name and birthday (not the year).  When the book arrives, the Birthday Club student checks out the book first and gets to keep it as long as s/he wants.  Regardless of when your child's birthday is, we collect funds in September and purchase Birthday Club books in October for everyone.  This allows us to enjoy the new books for most of the school year.  Please consider supporting our fundraiser.

Coffee & Donuts are back
Isn't it wonderful to have a delicious cup of coffee and a donut waiting for you at Café Perpetua after the 9:30 Mass? This is only possible thanks to some wonderful and dedicated volunteers. Most of them have done it for many years. In order for this wonderful tradition to continue we need your help. Here is what you'd be doing: pick up donuts at Safeway, set up, make coffee & lemonade and clean up after.
You can do it once a month or less often, whatever your busy schedule allows. Please contact Christoph at the parish office if you're willing to assist.

Special Intentions
We remember those in need of our prayers:
  • Jim Tschann, grandfather of Charlotte and William, who is recovering from a heart attack and subsequent surgery
  • Terry Lewis, father of Mrs. Stacey Hinton, who is ill
  • Alumni parent of St. Perpetua School who is undergoing medical treatment
  • Eveline Adhiyasa, grandmother of Kyle Jones, who is ill
