2018-2019 Bulletin # 5

Thank you to Mrs. Delaplane and the 8th graders for leading our Liturgy this morning in the amphitheater! The students exemplified leadership and faith through the readings, songs, and participation! We are looking forward to watching the seeds of learning and development grow this year!
The construction crew is doing work on the water lines today.  In an abundance of caution, we asked the students not to use the water fountains at school.  However, waters bottles were made available and the bathrooms remained fully functioning.  The work on the lines will be completed today.

Tomorrow is picture day! All students need to be in uniform and every student will be photographed as part of their school record. If you choose to order pictures, the form was sent home last week.  You can also place your order online at mylifetouch.com.  Our St. Perpetua Picture Day ID is BY118048Q0.

This Friday is a noon dismissal for students. On these first Fridays, the staff gathers after lunch for professional development sessions. This Friday, we will have a staff retreat, led by Paula Pardini, to foster community and faith development.

Father of all mercies
We ask that you would bless
the youngest and littlest of learners,
the most helpless and powerless of persons,
with Your infinite and loving mercy,
granting them the strength to learn, concentrate,
and act in love towards
their teachers and fellow students.
We also ask that You would watch over them,
at home and at school
and give them proper direction
so that they may learn
of Your wonderful virtues.

We ask this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen

Children's Choir
Welcome to the new school year!  I am Lisa Holmes, the St. Perpetua music teacher, and I am starting a children's choir.  We will sing at the monthly Rise and Shine masses and at school masses throughout the school year.  The group is comprised of 4th - 8th grade students from both the school and the church communities. We will have fun sharing our voices and our fellowship!

If your child enjoys singing, even if they have had no training outside of school, I would like to invite them to join me on Monday afternoons from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the RRC beginning September 10th and continuing through April 15th. The school students will also have the opportunity to rehearse on Tuesdays at lunchtime. If your child is interested in joining the group, even after we have started, let me know.  We will always make room!

Please fill out the registration form or the hard copies hanging on the wall in the school office.  Feel free to contact me if you have questions at lholmes@csdo.org
The Counselor's Corner
I hope your children have eased into the school year with joy! I have loved reconnecting with students, parents and staff this year and I look forward to this year working again as the school counselor.

My goal is to support the philosophy of St. Perpetua School, to "work in partnership with parents, the primary educators, for the development of the whole child: spiritually, academically, socially, and physically." I am here to promote wellness and ensure that students have resources to help them understand ways to better take care of themselves, connect with others and be successful in their own goals. I am also available to meet with students when they are facing challenges. Some common issues that arise are boundary setting with friends, self-esteem, meeting academic potential, grief/ loss, anxiety and adjusting to change.

Additionally, I will be organizing 2-3 Parent Education Nights this year. I welcome your input on relevant topics you would like to see discussed.

Please be sure to complete a NEW Counseling Permission Slip. Even if you completed one last year, I do need a new one on file this year to meet with your student(s). I will keep the new permission slip on file for your upcoming years at St. Perpetua.

I welcome your feedback and encourage you to contact me with any ideas or concerns. I am available for conferences by phone or in person. You can reach me by email (kbacher@csdo.org) or phone (284-1640 ext. 118). I look forward to working with your children and you this year.

Cafe` Perpetua will be starting its 16th year on Friday, September 21st! The cafe` is open on Friday mornings when school is in session from 7:30 to 9:30. We feature homemade breakfast items such as cinnamon coffee cake, seasonal scones, muffins, and breads, frittata, breakfast sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, chocolate cake (a cafe` favorite!) and specials of the day! During fall we also have organic jams, basil pesto, salsas, pies, zucchini breads, and veggies and flower arrangements from the Garden of Learning.  The cafe` is a great place to catch up with old friends, and if you are new to the school, it's a great place to meet new ones!

Since its inception, Cafe` Perpetua is the major fundraiser for the Garden of Learning!  By supporting the cafe` you are supporting your children's garden.

Summer Reading Program
Yesterday, we concluded our Summer Reading Program.  Thank you for supporting your students encouraging them to read.  Thank you Melissa Silvestri for creating the Free Dress Passes and organizing the Popsicle Party.  Congratulations to our faculty Summer Readers:  Mrs. Goodshaw, Mrs. Fogarty, Mrs. Meo, Ms. Schwarck and Mrs. Hinton.  Make sure to give these gals a high five the next time you see them!  Let's not forget our students.  The following students received a Blackout BINGO!  Aerin, Claire J., Isabella, Jonah, Keilah, Marina M., Matthew G., Max, Melissa, Milo, Peter, Rowan, Sean, and Shane.  These students read 25 books or more this summer!  Great Job Summer Readers!

Birthday Club
Join the Library's Birthday Club to celebrate your child's birthday and foster a love of reading.  For a donation of $20 per child, families can help to support the library.  Click here for form.

This is the way we raise funds to purchase new books that the kids want to read.  Each Birthday Club student gets to select a new book to purchase for the library.  A commemorative label will be placed in the front of the book with the child's name and birthday (not the year).  When the book arrives, the Birthday Club student checks out the book first and gets to keep it as long as s/he wants.  Regardless of when your child's birthday is, we collect funds in September and purchase Birthday Club books in October for everyone.  This allows us to enjoy the new books for most of the school year.  Please consider supporting our fundraiser.
 Instrumental Music Program
Our young musicians gave a wonderful recital in the spring and the Instrumental Music Program is now going into its 25th successful year!  If you would like to have your child learn to play a musical instrument at school (or possibly in your home), the registration form can be found on the school website, here, or under "This Week's Flyers."  Lessons at school will begin mid-September.  Please send registration forms or questions about the Music Program to Ryan Habegger at ryan@imcmusiclessons.com.
