Birthday Club-- Join the Club and help us get books kids love!
Please help us to continue building our library collection with books that kids love to read. Join the Birthday Club! For a small donation, your child gets to select a new book to be purchased for our school library. The book will have a nameplate in the front cover, celebrating your child's birthday. We collect all Birthday Club forms now, regardless of your child's birth date. In October, students select the new books that are ordered for the library. The Birthday Club student will be the FIRST student to borrow the new book from the library. S/he also gets to check out the Birthday Club book as an "extra" book, in addition to his/her regular library books. The kids love to participate just as much as they love to celebrate birthdays. Please consider helping our library to continue growing. Having kid-selected books in the library helps us to develop a love of reading.

If you'd like to download a Birthday Club form, go to our school website athttp://www.stperpetuaschool.org/programs/library/birthday_club/ Contact our school librarian, Stacey Hinton, with any questions atshinton@csdo.org

Friendships. Relationships. Peer interactions. One of the most common topic kids come to me to talk about is related to friendships and classmates. Social interactions affect school whether we want to admit it or not. Kids often cannot put away thoughts and emotions about peers even when they are supposed to focus on academics. Interactions happen in the classroom. They affect learning.

As parents we want to help guide our kids into making good choices in relationships. Although we can coach them to "do the right thing" in regards to social interactions, we cannot be with them every moment. Peer pressure (blatant or perceived), impulsivity and intrinsic motives sometimes take-over when interacting with others. Children often can't remember what we taught to them when emotions rise. It is important to empower our kids by consistently giving them tools to interact appropriately. We also need to reinforce their positive interactions as much as we can.

Every student, (even the most social one) goes through difficult relationships at some point. They will make mistakes with friends and they will learn from those mistakes more than they will learn from our words. One book that I have found very helpful for kids isGrowing Friendships: A Kids' Guide to Making and Keeping Friendsby Eileen Kennedy-Moore.Growing Friendshipsis a toolkit for kids as they make sense of the social world around them. Kids can read real-life scenarios (on their own or with you) and can take those tools with them into their interactions.

I have really enjoyed seeing so many wonderful friendships at St. P's. I can tell parents and staff have worked hard at instilling great friendship tools in the students and the kids do use them. If your children are having a hard time finding the right tools when needed, please let them know they can ask an adult for help. Seeking assistance is an essential tool for us all.
I always welcome parent emails!kbacher@csdo.org
